We have ourselves a Brazilian Sweeney Todd here, Ladies and Gentlemen. Those of you unfamiliar with the broadway musical may be aware of the Tim Burton interpretation. If you’re not familiar with either, let me break it down for you.
Both the musical and Burton film were based on the urban legend of a barber who would slit his customers throats while shaving them and his wife or mistress would turn them into delicious meat pies which were then sold to the unsuspecting public. That is what we have here, except instead of the foggy mystique of Victorian London, we have the modern day favelas of Brazil and featuring a man who wrote a book obsessing about killing women and whose dark fantasies were finally realized with the help of his wife and their black magic mistress.
Jorge Beltrao Negromonte da Silveira (51), his wife Isabel Cristina Pires (51) and live-in mistress Bruna Cristina Oliveira da Silva (22) were arrested in April 2012 in the city of Garanhuns, state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Police began an investigation after one of them had used the credit card of a woman who was reported as missing. A search of the house and backyard revealed a grisly scene. Cooked and raw human remains had been found in the kitchen and sealed up inside the walls. In the backyard, police uncovered the bodies of two women who had been missing since early 2012. They have been identified as Alexandra Falcao and Giselly Helena.
Upon arrest, the trio confessed to killing nine women. The first victim was Jessica Camila da Silva Pereira (22) who was homeless with a baby when Isabel invited her to stay with her and her husband in the house they were living in at the time in Rio Doce, Olinda in 2008. They then killed Jessica and adopted the little girl as their own, with Bruna taking the identity of Jessica. They moved numerous times, living in the city of Conde, Jaboatão Guararapes and Gravesend, until settling in Garanhuns, in early 2011 using the child to lure women to the house on the pretense of being hired as a nanny. The trio claims to have done this at least nine times before finally being caught and the child being taken away from that hell.
So far only three of the victims have been identified and the search is ongoing for the others. What happened to these women must have been horrific. It is believed that Jorge is the ringleader and that he and Bruna did the killing while his wife, Isabel, took the flesh of the victims and used them in making empanada pastries which the trio ate and also sold to neighbors, even making their way to churches, hospitals and schools.
Jorge wrote a fifty page book autobiography entitled “Revelations of a Schizophrenic”, in which he details his obsession with wanting to kill women and about the voices that he hears in his head. All three are members of a sort of cult which believes in depopulating the world for the greater good and Bruna has sometimes been associated with witchcraft and black magic. Upon being offered food in jail she refused to eat the meat, saying that she would only eat human flesh. The trial began in 2012 and is still ongoing…
